A Guide to Seattle

for people who came for a day and stayed for the rain

You’re standing somewhere in Seattle. It’s probably grey. That’s not a warning, that’s the point.

First, the rain

It’s not really rain, most of the time. It’s a mood with moisture in it. Nobody here owns an umbrella and everyone owns a good hood. Write the paragraph that explains why the locals are fine.

The market, without being a tourist

Pike Place at 8am versus Pike Place at 2pm are two different cities. Write which one you’d send a friend to, and the one stall that’s worth the crowd.

the thing everyone photographs

Say what it is, then say what to do instead.

Ferries

The cheapest great view in the city is a walk-on ticket. Write about the crossing, the wind, the coffee that’s always slightly burnt, and what’s on the other side.

Take the boat and read the meditation on the deck

Coffee (not that one)

Everyone knows the chain. Write about the place you actually go.

Music

Grunge is a museum exhibit now. Write about what’s playing tonight, and where.

Neighborhoods

One paragraph each, in your own order. Which one is for a rainy Tuesday? Which one is for a rare hot Saturday?

The mountain is out

Explain the phrase. Explain what it does to a whole city when it happens.

Somewhere along the bottom of this page there’s a ridge and, on the right, a mountain. In Seattle you don’t get to see it most days either.
